Skinfood: Mushroom BB cream
Skinfood is my favorite brand of the moment, and my favorite BB cream brand so far. I actually have picked up no less than *three* different types of BB cream from them recently. The first I purchased was this Mushroom BB cream for mature skin. Pretty much all BB creams are multi-functional in that they provide SPF and blemish coverage (ie act like a foundation). I am intrigued by them because they are not really like your average foundation. They provide a much heavier and long lasting coverage than most foundations I’ve tried without being caky I think this particular BB cream achieves this by providing good hydration. I think it’s a good one for dry skin of any age for this reason. They also don’t run, smudge or flake up which is a big plus. Admittedly if you don’t get the colour match to your skintone BB creams can look rather ghastly. The main issue I have with them are the greyish undertones, and I have had this problem to various degrees with most of the BB creams I’ve tried so far. This one isn’t too bad on they greyish front; it has a slightly warmer tone than others I’ve tried. Still, when there is only two shades to begin with you’re slightly limited in selecting a tone that fits perfectly. However, most BB creams will tend to blend into your natural skintone after a little while, especially if you apply only a light cover, so this may not be so much an issue. Another point is that they are designed for Asian skin types and would probably suit these best. However, if you don’t have Asian ancestry BB creams might still be good for you, even as a base underneath mineral makeup or other foundations to provide long lasting blemish coverage and sun protection. With this particular brand you could even buy both shades and blend the two if you lie somewhere in between. Back to the mushroom BB cream; firstly it smells great! I can’t quite place it but it has a really pleasant floral smell too it. Secondly, it is great at providing sun protection; I never get any sun burn or sun damage when using this. As far as their ‘whitening’ claims I am convinced this is simply a result of the tint and the sunblock preventing further pigmentation. I don’t think there is any permanent whitening effect aside from the obvious preventative role of the SPF. Also, I tend to be a bit ambivalent about ‘whitening’ claims; it seems a tad racist but on the other hand I know plenty of people who use them to try to minimize discoloration and pigmentation spots which is an entirely different issue so I’ll leave it at that.
This particular BB cream blends in wonderfully, and as I said before is a warmer tone and doesn’t give you a ghastly gray look. Others I’ve used needed a little blush or bronzer on top but this doesn’t. The packaging is very cute, with a rustic looking a cardboard cap; be warned though; this is no good for wet areas, the packaging will get soggy and deteriorate if it gets too wet. The consistency is just right for a BB cream, it lasts a long time and the two shades available are quite flattering and I imagine would blend into most skin types. The thing I like most about BB creams is that they also double as a bit of a barrier cream for those prone to contact dermatitis. If you can find one that feels good on your skin it can act as a protective barrier from both sun and environmental irritants. This one certainly does feel good on my sensitive skin, and I would think it would be good on most sensitive skin types too. I’m not sure if this is my all time favorite of all the Skinfood BB creams available, but it is certainly a very good one.
