Clarins: Gentle Foaming Cleanser with Shea Butter

I have some mixed feelings about this particular cleanser for dry and sensitive skin. The first couple of times I used it I wasn’t so sure it was good for sensitive skin. It tingled a little and I believe that that has to do with the shea butter content. I have had bad experiences using shea butter in the past; even on my body but I think this might be an individual sensitivity on my part. The first couple of times I used it were on make up free skin in the morning whereas lately I have been using it at night to remove make-up and oily residue from the day and have had no repeat ‘tingly’ incidents at all. In fact it has been quite nice and hydrating. It is a very creamy cleanser, without actually being a cream cleanser and it does a good job at removing light makeup. For anything heavier, such as a BB cream or a long-lasting foundation (for example double wear) you would probably need a cream or oil cleanser. Just to test it on bare skin again, I switched back to using it in the mornings recently and I found that it only tingled a little (and much less than initially) if my skin was particularly dry. That tends to depend on what I use overnight. For example if I lather my face in cold cream for the night I wake up with a slight oily residue, however if I use something lighter I wake up with dry skin. Also, in hot, humid weather, which makes my skin a little more oily than usual (which I love) I had no problems using it on bare skin. I am tending toward the thumbs up for this, as although I did experience tingle there was no lasting irritation and the end result was always fresh and hydrated skin, it seems that my skin has become somewhat used to it over the past month of use. I really love the smell too, it reminds me a little bit of a rich vanilla ice-cream for some reason even though it doesn’t actually directly smell like vanilla or icecream at all – I think it’s just an odd association I have. The smell isn’t offense, at least not to me but if you prefer a scent-free cleanser than I would give this a miss if I were you. All in all, I think this would be great for people with mild sensitivities, but not on cracked or severely dry skin. Although it appears to retain the skins moisture I was a bit concerned about the ‘tingle’ experience. If, unlike me, your skin laps up shea butter then this might be great for you. It is a relatively gentle foaming cleanser that I think would be good for most sensitive skin types if you prefer those over cream cleasners. I think you might also like it if you are already a fan of Clarins’ products. However, if you tend to be more like me, and have some issues with shea butter then I would give this a miss.
