Banana Boat: Aloe Vera Gel

11 August 2010 Tags: , No Comment

Do not be fooled by the name! This is not pure aloe vera gel. This product contains a host of other ingredients (and yes *some* aloe vera gel) including; Alcohol Denat, Polysorbate 20, Glycerin, Carbomer, Triethanoiamine, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid, Benzophenone-4 and even Perfume! Doesn’t sound very natural does it. I foolishly grabbed this after accidentally getting sunburnt thinking that it was simple old pure aloe vera gel. It was the second of two foolish actions; the first of course was getting sunburnt in the first place. If you have sensitive skin that’s not a good idea, and despite slathering on the sunblock in a sweaty humid environment (and with swimming) I ended up getting a moderate sunburn. When I applied this on the sunburn it stung! Using pure aloe vera gel has never stung on my sunburn, if anything it tends to give a nice cooling and soothing sensation. Not only did this sting, but it left my skin irritated afterward. I’ll give it some credit in that I didn’t end up with a horrible rash, but that was probably because after my first few uses and actually reading the ingredients I stopped using it and went in search of some *real* aloe vera gel. The thing that annoys me most about this product is the blatant false advertising. The label makes it seem like this is simply aloe vera gel when in fact it is far from it. It really should be called an after sun gel.
If you are ever unfortunate enough to get sun burnt and have sensitive skin, head straight for a pure aloe vera product, or better yet, just squeeze some out of an aloe vera plant leaf if you have one near by. It’s not hard to find and not that expensive either. It’s really the only fail safe option for soothing sun burn. I would recommend pure aloe vera for sun burn when your skin is not particularly sensitive either, as how can you go wrong? This is definitely one product to avoid, whether you have sensitive skin or not, if only because of the misleading name of the product.

You can buy Banana Boat Aloe Vera Gel, 16 Fluid Ounces on Amazon for around $7
